The first south bound shorebirds of the year have been reported this week.
On the 7th on the shores of the Carp River just south of Carp there were;
GREATER YELLOWLEGS (1), LESSER YELLOWLEGS (2), SOLITARY (2) and SEMIPALMATED
(2) SANDPIPERS as well as local breeding SORA (2), VIRGINIA RAIL (1), COMMON
GALLINULE (1) and COMMON TERN (2).
Also on the 7th at the Embrun lagoons there were LESSER YELLOWLEGS (10),
SOLITARY (1) and LEAST (25) SANDPIPERS and at the St Albert lagoons there were
SOLITARY (1), SEMIPALMATED (1) and LEAST (17) SANDPIPERS as well as BLUE-WINGED
(5) and GREEN-WINGED (1) TEAL, PIED-BILLED GREBE (1), AMERICAN BITTERN (1),
GREEN HERON (2), VIRGINIA RAIL (1), SORA (1), COMMON GALLINULE (7), AMERICAN
COOT (3), SPOTTED SANDPIPER (1), TREE (40), BANK (10) and BARN (5) SWALLOWS,
VESPER (1) and SAVANNAH (2) SPARROWS.
On the 8th on a flooded field at Bankfield Rd near hwy 416 there were; GREATER
YELLOWLEGS (1), LESSER YELLOWLEGS (3) and LEAST SANDPIPER (4).
The Moodie Dr pond (just south of Trail Rd) has been more active recently. On
the 7th there were; GADWALL (25), MALLARD (50), BLACK DUCK (1), RING-NECKED
DUCK (1) and RUDDY DUCK (9).
Interesting sightings;
- Great EGRET (up to 6) have been seen at a few locations but mostly along the
Ottawa River
- LEAST BITTERN (1) on the marsh south of the Nortel buildings on the 6th
- WHIP-POOR-WILL (8, 2 seen) just north of Thurso on the 7th
- CASPIAN TERN (2) on the rocks in the Ottawa River Deschenes Rapids on the 10th
- BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the creek at the west end of Andrew Haydon Park
on the 10th
