Ontbirds subscribers,
I spent much of the late afternoon today watching birds out in Lake Ontario off
my front lawn. Besides a dozen one year-old Bonaparte's Gulls and several
Caspian Terns flying past, just after 6:00 p.m. I saw an American White Pelican
gliding by from west to east very high up overhead. It continued east past the
point just west of Stevenson Rd. S. and was still up very high as I lost sight
of it to the east.
However, this was not the most interesting sighting of the day. At about 6:45 a
flock of 51 Long-tailed Ducks landed just east of my house and have been
loafing there for a couple of hours just 100 metres off shore. We often have
small numbers of Long-tailed Ducks summering off the Whitby shore, but this is
by far the largest flock of summering birds that I have seen here.

Directions: To reach Thickson's Woods, take Highway 401 to exit 412, and exit
onto Thickson Rd. S. and proceed 2 kilometres south to it terminus at a
cul-de-sac at the entrance to the Waterfront Trail. Park here and continue to
walk south on Thickson Rd. S. to the private road (Crystal Beach Boulevard)
that runs east along the shore of the lake. All birds were seen off the second
roadway running north towards Thickson's Woods.
