The American White Pelican, found by Susan Atkinson and Kelly Balkom on August 18 at Luther Marsh, was still present last night. Kory Renaud, Laura Bond and I arrived around 7:00 PM and scoped the marsh from the viewing platform located near the parking lot at the northeast corner of the marsh, just north of the intersection of Sideroad 21/22 and Concession Road 8. This is about 2 km south of the location where the Dickcissel was present earlier this summer Kory picked up the pelican in flight to the west, over Windmill Island. It landed out of view (before Laura and I could see it), but eventually we found it resting in the water northwest of Windmill Island. We walked from the parking lot west along the north side of the marsh and viewed the bird from a canoe launch located about 1.5 km from the parking lot. Here is a link to a google map showing the location of the parking lot, the location where we viewed the pelican from, and the bird's location in the marsh. http://goo.gl/maps/bEv3u Luther Marsh is massive and the bird could easily hide around the various islands. Viewing the bird is probably easiest by canoe or kayak.
Luther Marsh is located on the border of Wellington and Dufferin Counties, about 50 km north of Guelph.
