Hi Ontbirders, This morning at 0558, I observed 19 Great Egrets roosting on the mudflats of the Millpond in Hespeler (near Cambridge). During the period 0615 - 0639 (when I was joined by Mike, Ken and Jim Burrell), 17 of the egrets flew off to east and two remained foraging on the mudflats. I did not see any tagged birds. This is a particularly attractive and easy to find site for viewing (and photographing) roosting egrets. Any Ontbirders who have not had an opportunity see this activity, should consider visiting it, if feasible.
Also, if anyone could census this area for egrets for me on a once a week basis, I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you privately. Directions: Go north at Exit 282 (Hespeler Road/Hwy 24) off Hwy 401; this is one of the exits in the Cambridge area. Turn right (east) at the first lights (Queen St.) and go through the community of Hespeler. Continue east to 235 Queen St. on the left, which is posted as "The Ellacott Overlook". This is a small parkette with a parking lot and a nicely designed picnic area overlooking the Millpond with steps down to the edge of the Millpond. The egrets roost directly out in front of the Overlook, 200-300m to the north. Sometimes they roost in the trees on the north side of the Millpond. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
