Weather: Sunny skies and a gentle northwest breeze made for a picture perfect Labor Day by the lake. Raptor Observations: Limited numbers overall but lots of variety kept things interesting. A late afternoon peregrine provided the season's first three falcon day. Non-raptor Observations: Red-winged Blackbird (25+), Common Grackle (15+), Purple Martin (13), Mourning Dove (30+), Ruby-throated Hummingbird (5), American Goldfinch (15+) and Great Blue Heron (4) were moving in limited numbers. Other birds of note: Black-throated Green Warbler (1), Chimney Swift (11), Blue-winged Teal (6), Black-crowned Night Heron (1), Belted Kingfisher, Tree Swallow, Rough-winged Swallow, Barn Swallow, Cedar Waxwing, Forster's Tern, Caspian Tern and Warbling Vireo. The location is at the mouth of the Detroit River as it enters Lake Erie. Directions to site: Lake Erie Metropark: >From I-75, exit at Huron River Drive (exit 27). Continue east on Huron River Drive. Turn left on West Jefferson and proceed a few hundred yards to the entrance of Lake Erie Metropark.
