Her husband Chip was back today for a couple hours (thanks for helping me put up a new Canadian flag). The Kovarik's from Tecumseh came by for their first of many visits for the season. Bob & Margaret Miller from Chatham also stopped in for their first visit of the season. They have become devoted hawk watchers after hanging out with me for several days last year. Weather: Clear and sunny most of the day with the temperature starting off at 12C and rising to 24C. The winds started out of the north, shifted to north-east, be-calmed at 10:00 EST, then shifted to south for the next 2 hours, and finally settled at south-west. The barometric pressure was steady aroun 30.2. Raptor Observations: 87 birds of 9 species. It started off slow again today but eventually we had a nice mix of birds with another 5 Bald Eagles and a late afternoon run of Turkey Vultures. The resident 1st year Bald Eagle did not learn from yesterday's lesson. It attempted to chase an Osprey carrying a fish for about 15 minutes, but never did catch up with the Osprey. Non-raptor Observations: Also another slow passerine day. You can tell it was slow as I actually counted Eurasian Starlings today and had 262 of them in four flocks. Probably the last time this year I will report that species. Had 3 new species of shorebird for the count today with: 27 Killdeer; 7 Black-bellied Plover; and, 2 Short-billed Dowitcher. Had the highest count, so far, of Chimney Swift at 26. Singles of both Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatch. Cedar Waxwings are still strong at 87 birds. Another day with 61 American Goldfinch, and the first flock of Red-winged Blackbirds at 15. Predictions: Going to be a hot one with the temperature starting at 18C and rising to 30C. Winds are predicted at 20 km/hr all day coming out of the south-west. A probably thunderstorm late in the afternoon. Not the best conditions for migration. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
