Observers: Bob Pettit, Cindy Cartwright, Dwayne Murphy, Jim McCoy,
Larry Ludwicki, Mike Fitzpatrick, Olga Klekner,
Roland Klekner, Sue Fortuna
Visitors:
Bob Sanders from Kingsville stopped by for just over an hour in time to see
the first run of Broad-wings. Daniel and his wife from Noranda, Quebec
stayed most of the day, and will be back to visit us during the Hawk
Festival this weekend.
Weather:
90 - 95% cloud cover all day with a rising barometric pressure; temperature
ranged from 12 - 15C; the winds were as predicted starting from the NW and
then moving to N and ranged from 15 - 30 km/hr.
Raptor Observations:
It was the first big day of the year today. Broad-wing Hawks finally showed
up in reasonable numbers with 2,699 for the day. Sharp-shinned Hawks were
also on the move at 476 birds. Next in line was American Kestrel and 140
birds. It is looking like a good year for Bald Eagles with another 8 today.
The total day count was 3,401 birds of 10 species.
Non-raptor Observations:
The high winds kept the passerine numbers lower than the last several days.
American Goldfinch, at 135 for the day, almost knocked Cedar Waxwing from
the leader board, but they stayed ahead at 145 birds for the day. Third
place went to "Warbler spp" at 85 birds. They were flying high in bad light
and not "chipping" so they went unidentified as to species. Other
interesting observations were: 8 - Pectoral Sandpiper; 11 each of Chimney
Swift and Ruby-throated Hummingbird; and the first American Crow at 6
birds. Only 2 Monarchs today.
Predictions:
It is looking like another good day for raptor migration with winds out of
the north-west at 10 - 12 km/hr; mostly sunny and with the temperature
ranging from 7 - 20C.
