Visitors:
Quite a few visitors on this slow day including: Chris and Sarah from
Toronto; 3 from Oshawa; another 2 from Toronto; 2 from Windsor; 2 from
Essex; 2 from Trenton MI; 2 from Yorkshire, England, 2 from Kingsville and
our regular friends from Tecumseh.
Weather:
Another cloudy day with limited visibility. Temperature ranged from 20 -
26C, which with humidity levels of 75-95% made for a muggy day. Winds, when
they blew, were out of the South all day. The wind speed never made it
above 5 km/hr, and was usually in the 1 - 2 km/hr range.
Raptor Observations:
A slow day with only 47 raptors of 4 species. Sharp-shinned Hawks
predominated at 37 of the 47 birds counted. During the 1200 - 1300 hour I
was actually at -1 Sharpie, 3 flew west and shortly afterward 4 went back
east. Merlins put in another good show with 4 birds.
Non-raptor Observations:
As I said before, you know it is a slow day when I count Starlings. Two
flocks went over totaling 105 birds. The first Northern Shovelers, a male &
female, were observed in the marsh with the Gadwall, American Wigeon,
Green-winged & Blue-winged Teal, Black Duck and Mallards. Shorebirds
included: 1 Killdeer; 1 Spotted Sandpiper; and, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs. Only 1
Swift today, and 5 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. The number of Cedar Waxwings
and American Goldfinch were down today at 8 & 12 birds respectively. Five
species of warbler were observed in the scrubs around the hawk tower. 4
Monarchs.
Predictions:
It has happened already.
