Clear throughout, the wind was light and out of the east. Raptor Observations: It was an action-packed 12 species day that featured season-to-date high counts for American Kestrel, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Northern Harrier, Turkey Vulture and Osprey. From 1030 on, the flight was fast and furious with sharpies and kestrels shooting by at a brisk clip, harriers coming over in bunches and a procession of mixed vulture and broadwing groups winding their way past. Also, we added our second Red-shouldered Hawk of the season as well as two more Swainson's Hawks. Non-raptor Observations: Songbird migration continues to be slow with small numbers of Red-winged Blackbird, American Goldfinch and Blue Jay the only noticeable migrants in the morning. Chimney Swifts (60+) were abundant today as were Tree and Rough-winged Swallows. Also, two Wood Ducks passed by in the afternoon. Predictions: A lot like today, it's going to be partly cloudy with light east wind and mild temps. Hopefully, there's a few more birds interested in moving. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
