The wind was light out of the northeast at first and gradually shifted to southeast by the end. Raptor Observations: Certainly not as eventful as the previous two days but there was still a good number of birds to observe. Turkey Vultures, Northern Harriers and American Kestrels were still interested in moving, as were a nice assortment of buteos and accipiters. The day's highlight came when we watched our local Cooper's Hawk stoop on a starling, deftly plucking his too-slow prey right out of the sky. Non-raptor Observations: Today marked our first significant push of Blue Jays (2500+). Six American Golden Plovers floated by in the morning. The trees around the site had Cape May, Black-throated Green and Blackpoll warblers in them. White-throated Sparrows, both kinglets and a Winter Wren were seen on the trails. Predictions: Partly cloudy with light to moderate north wind. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org Site Description: The Detroit River Hawk Watch (a joint venture of the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge and its Friends group, the International Wildlife Refuge Alliance) is the Boat Launch at Lake Erie Metropark located approximately 20 miles south of Detroit, Michigan.
