Visitors:
Don & Linda from Dayton, Ohio stopped by for a couple hours after birding
at Point Pelee. Our 2 dear lady friends from Kingsville were back today.
Derryn & Shaun from Toronto stayed on the tower for a couple hours and we
elminated all their doubts about how we can count 4,000 Blue Jays or 40,000
Broad-winged Hawks in a day. And, in an interesting coincidence we had 2
different couples from Kingsville bring 2 different couples from Ottawa to
spend time on the tower.
Weather:
We were fogged in for more than an hour this morning, but when the fog
burned off it was cloudless, sunny day with temperatures between 10 and
23C. The winds had a northly component most of the day in the 4 - 8km/hr
range until the lake effect drew the air in off the lake from the SE. The
wind turbines to the north of the tower continued to point NE, but slowed
down significantly in their rotation.
Raptor Observations:
A total of 571 raptors of 10 species. The Bald Eagles just keep on coming
with another 6 today. There were Red-shouldered, Broad-winged and
Red-tailed Hawks (and even Monarchs) mixed in with the high flying kettles
of TV's. The best bird of the day was an adult Peregrine that sat on a tree
branch north of the trout pond for 2 hours before it flushed all the ducks
and took off west.
Non-raptor Observations:
The number of Blue Jays climbed today to 4,153. The first 10,000 Jay day
must be coming soon. Cedar Waxwings were back up to 46 birds today. We also
had 2 each of Chimney Swift and Ruby-throated Hummingbird. We had 20
Monarchs today, with many only seen through binoculars when we looked up to
count TV's hiving off their kettles.
Predictions:
A repeat of today with sunny, cloudless skies, winds out of the NE in the
morning at 15 km/hr and then switching to the E in the afternoon. Come out
early if you can as the birds get very high in the sky under these
conditions.
