I watched a Juvenile Peregrine falcon make several attempts to catch ducks at Mud Lake, Britannia Conservation Area at around 10:15 this morning. The Peregrine perched briefly several times on the trees along the west side of the lake in between attacks. Most of the ducks stayed on the water and dove when the falcon approached. The Peregrine finally flew off into the pine grove where the Great-Horned owls had nested this past spring.
There were quite a few Wood Ducks including several drakes in full breeding plumage. I watched two males exhibit courtship display movements to a hen and all three made a run along the water together with a drake on either sided of her. Also present on the lake some American Widgeon including a drake, a mixed flight of lesser scaup and blue-wing teal as well as a large number of mallards and Canada geese. To get to Mud Lake take Britannia Road off of Carling Avenue, From Britannia turn right onto Cassels Street and follow it to the small parking lot just before the water treatment plant. Good birding!
