The rain kept visitors away today. Weather: Well, it was a good day if you are a duck, as the old saying goes. Constant drizzle and rain today for the duration of the count. Temps were mild for October, 20.1 to 22.4, and light southerly winds prevailed. Raptor Observations: Very few raptors in the 5 hours of the count today. With the southerly winds, constant drizzle and rain not many raptors braved the weather to migrate today. The local / resident Bald Eagles were around on the West shoreline for much of the day....4 Immature and 1 adult were spotted throughout the day. Non-raptor Observations: Song birds around the tower gave us something to watch for much of the day. Some of the species logged today included: Ruby and Golden Crowned Kinglets, White Throated Sparrows, Tree and Barn Swallows, Eastern Phoebe, several flocks of mixed Black Birds, Downy (F) and Hairy (M) Woodpeckers, Northern Thrasher, Grey Catbird, Cardinal, Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker, American Robin, Yellow Rumped Warbler,Common Yellow Throat Warbler, and one Ruby Throated Hummingbird. The Blue Jays were also moving during times of lighter drizzle. 1630 Blue Jays tallied today. The marsh was also full of ducks, we found Northern Shoveler, Wood Duck, Mallard, American Black Duck, Pied Billed Grebe, American Coot, and Common Moorhen. Predictions: Still some chance of rain, but winds may be changing to add some westerly component. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Cindy Isenhoff ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
