Weather: Winds today were light from the E then swinging through ESE to SE and finally S. Temp was a bit warmer hitting a high of 21C. Humidity was low under almost completely clear skies. Raptor Observations: A similar flight as over the past few days just with fewer birds. Only 62 birds total...half which were TVs (36). Other birds tallied today included a single Osprey, a couple of Northern Harriers, a few Sharpies (7), a lone Cooper's Hawk and a small number of Redtails (15). There were no falcons seen at all today. Non-raptor Observations: Small flocks of Blue Jays were seen apparently migrating, as they were flying west, but our count is still way down compared to previous years with fewer than 15,000 recorded to date. At the B&B, large flocks of Starlings and Crows just flew back and forth, distracting observers searching the skies for migratory raptors. A brief walk at the Cliff produced 3 Warbler species; there are still many Yellow-rumped, and singles of Palm and Blackpoll were also spotted along with both species of Kinglet. Just inside the bean field on the west side of the parking area right at the Cliff was a nice selection of Sparrows including White-throated, Song, Field and White-crowned; as well, a Chipping Sparrow was seen on the wires close to a small flock (family?) of Eastern Bluebirds perched on the wires at Fairview Rd / Roberts Ln. Other songbirds observed foraging in shrubs along the edge of the bean field were Eastern Phoebe, Eastern Towhee, Hermit Thrush, Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch. Observers reported a few Monarch butterflies today plus Orange and Clouded Sulphur, Eastern Tailed Blue, 3 Commas and a single Painted Lady. In other insect news, a Lance-tipped Darner was observed patrolling the weedy edges of the "sparrow spot" in the bean field. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
