BLACK-HEADED GULL (1 1st winter) was reported with a BONAPARTE'S GULL (1st
winter) on the 15th on White Lake (outside the OFNC 50 km birding area) south
west of Arnprior at the end of Point Rd. It was not subsequently found but
BRANT (750+) flew over that location later the same day.
On the 15th I had a report of a YELLOW RAIL that was flushed along the Carp
River near Carp on the late afternoon of the 9th. This would be the first fall
record since one was flushed in the Richmond fen in August 1982.
ROSS'S GOOSE (1) first reported at the Almonte Lagoon on September 27th
continues to be seen there occasionally. It was reported on the 13th, 14th and
17th.
NELSON'S SPARROW were last reported on the 12th (2) but may still be present in
the wetland near the mouth of Constance Creek at the Ottawa River in Constance
Bay east of the east end of Allbirch Rd.
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE (1) was seen with CANADA GEESE on the Ottawa River
east of the Deschenes Rapids on the 17th.
Small but increasing numbers of WHITE-WINGED and BLACK SCOTERS are being seen
along the Ottawa River primarily from Dick Bell Park and the Shirley's Bay boat
launch. SURF SCOTER (2) were seen at Shirley's Bay and (1 1st winter) was
reported on Dow's Lake on the 17th.
Small numbers of RED-NECKED GREBE, COMMON LOON and increasing numbers of SCAUP,
COMMON GOLDENEYE and RED-BREASTED MERGANSER are being seen along the Ottawa
River.
Very few shorebirds are being reported mostly due to the very high water level
on the Ottawa River and local lagoons. The best location for shorebirds is
probably along the Carp River at the east end of Rivington St in Carp. GREATER
(2) and LESSER (1) YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPER (1) and DUNLIN (1) were
reported from that location this week. GREATER YELLOWLEGS (2) have been seen
along the shoreline of the bay west of Dick Bell Park and SPOTTED SANDPIPER
have been reported at Petrie Island.
SANDHILL CRANE (27) were seen west of Milton Rd mid way between Smith and
Perrault Roads on the 17th.
Interesting sightings:
- GREEN HERON were seen at the BCA on the 10th and 12th and on the Bilberry
Trail on the 11th
- CAROLINA WREN were found in the Hurdman woods (1) on the 11th and two have
been visiting a Qualicum Graham Park back yard every day since the 13th
- SORA (1) was found in the marsh south of the Nortel buildings on the 11th
- RED-NECKED PHALAROPE (1) at the Casselman lagoon on the 11th
- FOX SPARROW (2) were seen near the Hilda Rd feeders on the 12th
- NORTHERN SHRIKE (1) north of St Rose along Con 16 on the 15th
