Weather:
Cool and crisp and cloudy and grey, fall has finally arrived in all of its
desolate glory. Blustery west wind only added to the effect.
Raptor Observations:
A wonderful day of hawk migration, today was action-packed, species-rich
and highlight-filled. Thirteen species were seen including all three
falcons, two Osprey, a late October Swainson's and another cooperative dark
morph Rough-legged Hawk that crossed tantalizingly close. There was near
nonstop activity from the late morning on but the real show stopper was the
three o'clock hour when a long, snaking line of low Turkey Vultures wound
their way overhead, with attendant Red-tailed and Red-shouldered hawks
mixed in. Other highlights included sensational looks at a fast female
Merlin, a slow male harrier and a camera-loving adult Red-shouldered Hawk.
Non-raptor Observations:
Red-winged Blackbirds (800+) and small numbers of Rusty Blackbirds and
Common Grackles were moving in the morning. Yellow-rumpled Warblers filled
the nearby trees. A nice flock of Bonaparte's Gulls (16) was spotted in the
late morning. American Crows (600+) continued to push through.
Predictions:
Mostly cloudy with highs in the low 50s, moderate northwest wind and a
slight chance of afternoon rain. Should be another good day.
