Weather: Spent a few WINDY COLD hours at the cliff today. Strong SSW winds were 45 kph gusting to 60 kph and temp was a steady 12C. Sky was 100% overcast. Raptor Observations: Total birds today...138. Mary IDâd the first PEREGRINE high above the âBiteâ as it struggled across the field. She also spotted a N. HARRIER âflutteringâ across the field north of the observation mound. The second PEREGRINE came about the same line and at times it was headed west but then moving backwards in the wind. The TVâs were hugging the ground north of the ravine. Observers definitely got their share of sand in eyes; teeth; bins and camera! Non-raptor Observations: Despite today's extremely windy and gloomy conditions, observers managed to tally 21 non-raptor, avian species today. Early this morning, persistently peering into shrubs especially near Sharpie Alley yielded good looks at a few birds; these were White-throated Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, Robin, Yellow-rumped Warbler and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. We had good views from the observation knoll of 2 Common Loons, flocks of Mallards (5), Canada Geese (2 flocks totally 30), countless Ring-billed and Herring Gulls plus 2 Bonaparte's Gulls, 2 Rock Pigeons, numerous Bluejays, Crows and 4 very late Tree Swallows spotted by Jim D. (another Hawk Cliff and probably an Elgin County "latest fall" record). 2 Monarch Butterflies struggled to cross the row of willows along HC Rd, and 2 Green Darners were spotted in the field. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm
