Temperatures were somewhat warmer than they've been lately. Coupled with a lighter west wind, a few less layers were necessary. Raptor Observations: After yesterday's speed bump, we picked up right where we left off on Friday with yet another stellar outing. Turkey Vultures were less abundant but accipiters, buteos and eagles were all plentiful. Great looks at several Golden Eagles and Rough-legged Hawks were the highlight but there were also many close Red-shouldered, Red-tailed, Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks to be seen. Non-raptor Observations: There was lots going on today. Long-tailed Duck (1), Gadwall (3), Northern Shoveler (6), Sandhill Crane (1) and Common Loon (1) gave us separate fly-bys. A flock of Cedar Waxwings (25+) passed overhead in the morning. American Crows (600+) remained on the move. Caspian Tern (1), Forster's Tern (6) and Bonaparte's Gulls (5) could be observed in the channel throughout the day. Small numbers of Blue Jay, American Goldfinch, Red-winged Blackbird and Rusty Blackbird were noted. Also, after several days of high abundance, Tree Swallows (200+) were seen in smaller numbers today. Predictions: Clear in the morning, then cloudy later. Highs in the upper 40s and light west wind shifting more northerly late. Sounds good to me. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jonathan Stein ([email protected]) Detroit River Hawk Watch information may be found at: http://www.drhawkwatch.org _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
