This evening at about 5:30 pm, Dave Don and I refound the Lark Sparrow that was found this morning by Karl Dix at Fifty Point Conservation Area on the Hamilton-Grimsby border. The bird was in the gravel parking lot just west of the ball hockey rink, which is in the NE corner of the park. It was associating with a flock of Dark-eyed Juncos and Chipping Sparrows feeding in the short grass along the edges of the gravel lot. There is a line of poplars that runs north-south up the middle of the lot and another line of sumacs that bisect the western half of the lot. The bird was first found in the NE corner of the SW quadrant of the lot near a wooden trailer. It spent some time in the grass just south of the sumacs in the SW quadrant. Eventually, it and the other sparrows flew to the NW quadrant near the north end of the poplars. We left it in this area as it was getting dark. The bird was suprisingly difficult to see at times in the short grass. For those who care, this area is within Niagara Region. Hopefully it will stay overnight, but who knows? Directions: From the QEW highway in Hamilton, take the Fifty Rd exit (exit #78) and go north to the North Service Rd. Turn right and go east, and just past the bend take the first left, then immediately go right on Base Line Rd. The entrance to Fifty Point C.A. is a few 100 m on the left. An entrance fee is required (or show your season pass, money well spent). After the gate, take the road to the left and follow it around to where it turns east, go past the marina and the wooded creek, then the gravel lot is up ahead on your left, can't miss it.
