Weather: Windy and cold...winds from the W and moderate with not much cloud cover to start the day. Humidity dropped nicely mid-morning while the temp remained fairly steady around 5C and getting to 7C in the last hour of the count. Raptor Observations: The total birds for today was 656...with the bulk being TVs (324) , Sharpies (174) and Redtails (117). Also had Cooper's Hawks (11), Red-shoulders (18) and a few falcons...a single each of Kestrel and Peregrine and a couple of Merlin the 2nd of which we had in the last hour and it flew right in front of us. Excellent! There was a better push of Redtails today but Monday could bring the first big movement with predicted sun and northerly winds. Non-raptor Observations: Thanks to Jennifer, Derek and Jim for today's non-raptor observations. Observers were at 2 locations today -- the observation knoll at the south end of Hawk Cliff Rd and the B&B just north of Dexter Ln. Songbirds along Hawk Cliff Rd were about the same species we have been seeing throughout the past week with nice looks at some Hermit Thrush, plus lots of Eastern Bluebirds, Yellow-rumped Warblers, both Kinglets, etc. A Common Loon flew west across the mound, while others were seen flying south towards the lake at both locations. As well, there were more Bluebirds at the B&B (one which was perched right above us on the wire for a few minutes giving good views) and spotted sunning on wires along Fairview Rd all the way down from John Wise Ln to Dexter and along Dexter Ln, just west of the Port Stanley water tower. Flocks of Killdeer, Horned Larks, American Pipits and Am. Goldfinch entertained observers at the B&B, while a large flock of about 50 Am. Crows collectively did their best to interfere with counting the very high raptors and TVs. Most interesting non-bird sighting of the day was a blue / black damselfly spotted by Jennifer in the grass in front of observers at the B&B. Some subsequent research indicates that it may have been a Familiar Bluet. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
