Cold weather, high winds, snow storms and a busy time of year contributed to a
limited number of sighting reports in our area this week. A group of birders
found 14 species Sunday morning and another group Monday morning found 21
species. The river has not been very active and the land birds have been hard
to find as they seek shelter.
Welcome to winter birding!
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (3m 1f) were found on the Rideau River behind the tennis
club on the 26th with COMMON and HOODED MERGANSER, BUFFLEHEAD (1) with a total
of 7 waterfowl species observed. At the Giroux Rd ponds on the 23rd highlights
were NORTHERN PINTAIL (3), NORTHERN SHOVELER (1), COMMON MERGANSER (90) and
ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK (2).
Flocks of SNOW GEESE were observed on the 15th near Winchester (1000+),
Chesterville (2000+) and Casselman (2000 to 3000+). Small flocks of BOHEMIAN
WAXWING are in our area and a flock of 800+ SNOW BUNTING were seen near Embrun
on the 21st.
Large flocks of CANADA and a few CACKLING GEESE continue and the voles and mice
in the corn stubble fields seem to be attracting good numbers of raptors. In a
few hours on the 26th in the Trail Rd, Richmond and North Gower area RED-TAILED
(6), light morph ROUGH-LEGGED (2) HAWK and a NORTHERN HARRIER (1f) were found.
A NORTHERN GOSHAWK (ad) was found at Shirleys Bay on the 23rd and an adult BOLD
EAGLE was seen in the same area today.
GLAUCOUS GULL (3 or 4) were seen over the Trail Rd landfill on the 25th.
Thank you to the hardy souls who contributed bird observations!
