The Common Eider observation in my Kawartha Lakes regional report of
yesterday has been changed by the observer to: eider, species, 3, female.
Local hunting records from the past 20 years are being examined with the
probability of a new species being added to the Kawartha Lakes checklist.
The original observation was made Monday, Nov. 24 from County Road 24 south
of Bobcaygeon at Birch Point Marina on Sturgeon Lake. I visited this
location today from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm.. The area at Birch Point Marina is
now ice covered but nearer Bobcaygeon at the long bridge there is open
water. Many of the species listed from Monday were present today but in
smaller numbers.
I saw no eider species today but 3 female eider species were observed on
Monday.
An addition to the Kawartha Lakes regional report: A feeder in Woodville has
20 or so Goldfinches and more House Finches than other years. A few Pine
Siskins show up from time to time. Northern Shrike can be expected in this
area.
Blue Jay numbers are higher than usual at some feeders.
Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County) stretches from Ponty Pool in the
South to Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Provincial Park in the North. It
spreads from Carden in the west to Bobcaygeon in the East. Lindsay is the
largest urban centre. Kawartha Lakes includes the geographical features of
the northern shield and the southern farmland landscape of the St Lawrence
Lowlands.
Thanks,
Dan Bone
