I located a first winter female Common Eider late this afternoon immediately west of Fifty Point on Lake Ontario. This duck was consorting with a White-winged Scoter very close to a rock jetty at the entrance to the marina. It was diving frequently in the swells and came up with mussels at times.
Observers in the morning might be encouraged to go onto the point itself as the light may be good with the rising sun. Kevin McLaughlin, Hamilton. To reach Fifty Point Conservation Area, take the QEW to the Fifty Road exit in Stoney Creek and go north to the North Service Road. Turn right here and follow the curving road a short ways to the first left turn. Go a very short ways here and turn right onto Baseline Road. Take this road several hundred metres to the entrance of Fifty Point on the left. Take the second (east) driveway and go past the gatehouse (no attendant on weekdays and the honour system is in use now). Turn left at the "T" near the big pond. Take this road north where it will curve right. Go past the marina and the big pond and past the creek. Turn left here and go north to the lake. There is a small parking lot on the left and a larger one on the right closer to the lake. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
