Ottawa/Gatineau (Canada National Capital Region) E. Ontario, W. Quebec Compiler & transcriber Bob Cermak [email protected] or [email protected] Milder weather has encouraged many local birders to get out and as a result a good variety of late fall and early winter birds have been found. First ever for our Ottawa/Gatineau area, on the 3rd an adult male BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER was found near the Ottawa River shoreline above the Deschenes Rapids south of the pedestrian bridge at the west end of Ch. Vanier in Aylmer. The bird was seen yesterday but has not yet been reported today. HARLEQUIN DUCK (adult male and 1st winter male) have been seen below the Deschenes Rapids on the 2nd through the 4th. They have not been reported so far today but are likely still present. These birds are best observed from the Aylmer Ottawa River shore just east of the cement structure in the river near the east end of Rue Martel which runs east from Ch. Vanier. They have been seen a few times from Britannia Point at the east end of Cassels St. Extremely late birds found were: - CLAY-COLOURED SPARROW (1) near 2944 Pierce Rd on the 4th and near 3024 Pierce Rd on the 5th - AMERICAN BITTERN (1) with an injured wing on Brewery Creek behind Ecole Polyvalente de I'lle (next to the Robert Guertin arena). It is on the west shore of the creek north of the pedestrian bridge over the creek. Late birds found were: - SONG SPARROW along the Jack Pine Trails and along Cassels St in the Britannia Conservation Area - HERMIT THRUSH along Cassels St and likely the same bird across the river along the bike path east of Ch. Vanier - WHITE-THROATED SPARROW along Cassels St and at a Russell backyard feeder - GREEN-WINGED TEAL along the creek on March Valley Rd south of Klondike Rd - BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD near 17 Ch. Grimes, near 3024 Pierce Rd (f) and on Panmure Rd (m) at D.B. Munroe ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULLS are being seen on Trail Rd, a GOLDEN EAGLE (adult) was seen on Giroux Rd at Frank Kenny on the Nov 30th, a THAYER'S GULL (1st winter) was seen from the Bank St Billings bridge on the 1st, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (2 male) continue to be seen on the Rideau River from the tennis club, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (1 male and 1 female) continue in Pakenham,a small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL were reported over March Valley Rd, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (1 f) Rideau River behind the Donald St tennis club on the 3rd. RED-THROATED LOON (juv) and LONG-TAILED DUCK (m) were seen above the Deschenes Rapids on the 4th.
