The 37th Burk's Falls CBC was held on Wednesday, Dec 18 and the 19
participants found 30 species of birds consisting of 2062 individuals.

 

Notes

The cold temperatures before the count day resulted in the lakes and most
rivers frozen over resulting in a lack of waterfowl and absence of gull.  

Bald Eagles - 4 adults and 1 sub-adult is the 2nd highest ever 

Ruffed Grouse with 5 was well below the long term average of 12 and peak of
30

Wild Turkey - new high with 27 individuals

Downy Woodpecker with 27 is the highest since 2007 and second highest
(previous was 28)

Hairy Woodpecker at 31 was average

Pileated Woodpecker with 11 tied the previous high

Blue Jay with 485 is a new high - previous was 441 in 2000

American Crow with 23 was second highest - averages 7 birds

Black-capped Chickadee with 533 was below average

Golden-crowned Kinglet with 55 was above average of 24

European Staring with 84 was below average

Purple Finch with 68 was above average of 11 and highest number since 2000

White-winged Crossbill - 1 was found in the Magnetawan area

Common Redpoll with 50

House Sparrow with 4 was the lowest since 2002 - only found at one barn
