The Carleton Place CBC on the 27th found 44 species including WILD TURKEY
(371), COMMON RAVEN (32), SNOWY OWL (3), BELTED KINGFISHER (2), AMERICAN ROBIN
(26), SONG SPARROW (2), WHITE-THROATED SPARROW (2) and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD (1).
The massive SNOWY OWL irruption from the north into our area and further south
continues. There are at least 30, probably more, in our area and probably over
150 in eastern Ontario.
As expected at this time of year BALD EAGLE continue to be found foraging over
the Gatineau Hills, around the limited open water and over open fields in our
area.
There are extremely few winter finches so far this winter. PINE SISKIN (1) was
at a Rockcliffe feeder and 30 were reported on Conc. 7 west of Pakenham on the
26th.
CEDAR WAXWING (18) were seen in Carleton Place and 20 at Baskin's Beach. GRAY
PARTRIDGE (5) were found in the Pakenham area on Hanson Sdrd on the 26th and 10
were found on Farmview Rd on the 29th. A few AMERICAN ROBIN remain in the area
including on Cassels St. and an extremely late HERMIT THRUSH was found on
Cassels St on the 1st. WHITE-THROATED SPARROW have been reported at a few
feeders including 3 at the Fletcher Wildlife Garden feeder. A CAROLINA WREN was
at a feeder on Maplehill Way and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (6) were found along
the nearby Maple Hill Park trails on the 30th. RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER (2)
continue in Pakenham.
HARLEQUIN DUCK (2) were not reported this week but may continue near the bottom
(east) of the Deschenes Rapids. WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (1 f) and BARROW'S
GOLDENEYE continue on the Rideau River usually at the Hurdman pedestrian bridge
but occasionally behind the tennis club at the west end of Donald St.
BUFFLEHEAD (2) and LONG-TAILED DUCK (1 to 3) were found below the Deschenes
Rapids. A RED-NECKED GREBE was east of Bate Island and also on the Remic Rapids
on the 27th. HOODED MERGANSER (2 m) continue on the open water at the Bank St
Billings Bridge and some days west of that bridge there are GREAT BLACK-BACKED,
HERRING, GLAUCOUS and ICELAND GULLS. MALLARD, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, COMMON
GOLDENEYE and a few COMMON MERGANSER continue on the open water and CANADA
GEESE (2) were found on the Rideau River seen from the north Maple Hill Park
trail.
Interesting sightings this past week were:
- NORTHERN FLICKER has been reported in Pakenham since the 28th
- SONG SPARROW was found at 3724 Twin Elm Rd on the 29th
- GREAT BLUE HERON on the storm sewer pond on Strandherd Rd west of the Home
Depot on the 29th
- PURPLE FINCH (10) were found in the Gatineau Hills on the Eardley Masham Rd
- RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD (1) at a North Gower feeder this week
