A male
Red-Bellied Woodpecker is still present in South Porcupine (South Porcupine is
near
Timmins, in Northern Ontario's Cochrane District, 700 km north of Toronto). I
spotted the Red-bellied Woodpecker yesterday (Jan 11) at the
entrance of the Bart Thompson Trail (located at the end of Legion Drive and
Hellen avenue in South Porcupine). First
sighting of this bird was on Nov 22, 2013, and it is regularly being spotted in
the neighbourhood since then. Although the weather is mild at this moment, this
bird has been adapting surprisingly well considering the sustained extreme
freezing
temperatures (ranging from minus 40 C to minus 54 Celsius with wind chill
factor) during the last week of December and the first week of January.

Roxane Filion, South Porcupine, Cochrane District
