There will be an OFO field trip Sunday, January 19th:
Meet 8:00 a.m. at the Coliseum Theatre Parking Lot, northwest corner, 3090
Carling Ave., east of Bayshore. Explore Ottawa's west end for special winter
birds. Each winter is slightly different. So, the day's route depends on where
the birds are. We will follow a route that maximizes our chances of finding the
most interesting birds. Trip ends at noon.
Numbers of SNOWY OWL continue to be found on open fields all over our area.
There appears to be a movement of NORTHERN SHRIKE into our area since there
have been a significant increase in the number of sighting reports for that
species all over our area in the past week. BALD EAGLES continue to be reported
and with the abundant crop of berries such as Buckthorn small numbers of
AMERICAN ROBINS continue. A few flocks of 30+ SNOW BUNTING continue.
Interesting sightings this past week were:
BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (m) from Bate Island, LONG-TAILED DUCK (f) above, below and
on the Britannia Conservation Area inside channel of the Ottawa River Deschenes
Rapids, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (3) and CANADA GOOSE (1) Maple Hill Park which
is on the Rideau River, WOOD DUCK (f) on a ploughed field on Phelan Rd east on
the 13th and a SONG SPARROW at a Qualicum Graham Park feeder on the 15th.
