Today Jon Ruddy and I had a first-year Turkey Vulture at Prince Edward
Point(Point Traverse) in the southeast corner of Prince Edward County. It
was initially seen soaring over the lighthouse, then it landed on the beach.
Also present off Point Traverse near the shore were a pair of Black Scoters
and a first-year male Surf Scoter amongst approximately 75 White-winged
Scoters. In South Bay 2 Common Grackles were perched in a tree with 17
Brown-headed Cowbirds, and another single Common Grackle was seen north of
South Bay. Other species of interest: six Bald Eagles (only one was a full
adult), a Red-bellied Woodpecker, and a Short-eared Owl. At least 600
American Robins, 200 Blue Jays, and 200 Cedar Waxwings were feeding on
Buckthorn and other berries, the majority along Long Point Road. Of note
no Snowy Owls were observed in the eastern part of the county.

Directions: To access the lighthouse, see
http://peptbo.ca/maps--directions-c7.php, and then continue past the banding
station to the green gate, park to the right, and then walk to the
lighthouse. The scoters were concentrated below Traverse Woods, which is
accessed by walking on the trail starting by the Lyme Disease sign north of
the banding station.

Happy Birding!
Michael Runtz
