Hi Ontbirders, Kyle Holloway and I spent the day looking for Gyrfalcons at Sudbury's Kelly Lake.
In the afternoon at about three o'clock, after snowshoeing towards the creek, we were watching a Red Fox stalking the ducks when two goldeneye flew rapidly overhead closely tailed by the immaculate white Gyrfalcon. It was unsuccessful at capture, and disappeared. After a few minutes it reappeared beside the creek giving crippling views perched in a tree about seventy metres away from us, while being harassed by a raven. It perched for about three minutes until it took off towards the Business Park, strafed a raven a couple of times, and disappeared into the white. What a bird! See here for one of Kyle's great photos of the bird: http://www.flickr.com/photos/kholloway/12022817526/ We viewed the bird by snowshoeing towards the creek, and left the car at Southview Road. This gives the observer a large area to view including several potential perching sites. It's also where the ducks are concentrated. Another viewing angle can be obtained at the lake and nearby buildings from the West End Business Park off of Kelly Lake Road, reached by driving North on Southview and turning left at the stop sign. Southview Road can be reached via Highway 17. Good Birding!
