A few early spring migrants are finally arriving!


The Mississippi River from Carleton Place to Appleton has been active: 

- in Appleton, PIED-BILLED GREBE on the 14th, on the 15th RED-NECKED GREBE (1) 
and LESSER SCAUP (1) with many COMMON GOLDENEYE 

- in Carleton Place TRUMPETER SWAN (2) on the 9th and on the 15th (6) north of 
the hwy 7 bridge at Riverside Park and further north behind the high school. 
RED-BREASTED MERGANSER (3) and many COMMON GOLDENEYE the McNeely Ave bridge. 

Look for HOODED MERGANSER at these locations soon.

 

The first TURKEY VULTURE (1) of the year on the 18th over hwy 416 south of 
Fallowfield Rd and over Carleton Place on the 19th.

 

Britannia Conservation area and Britannia Yacht Club: HERRING, RING-BILLED and 
GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL continue, HORNED GREBE on the 15th and on the 20th 
AMERICAN ROBIN (5), RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD (1) and GREATER SCAUP (1).

 

Bate Island: COMMON MERGANSER and COMMON and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE (m & f) 
continue, HORNED GREBE east of the island on the 17th. 

Other reports were: NORTHERN SHRIKE in Greely, BALD EAGLE at Island Park Dr and 
Clearview Ave, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET (2) Maple Hill Park, ROUGH-LEGGED and 
RED-TAILED HAWKS, COOPER'S HAWK on Churchill Ave, BALD and GOLDEN EAGLE on 
Steele Line in Quebec, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD (3) Hilda Rd feeders, NORTHERN 
PINTAIL at the Bank St Billings Bridge, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER at Vincent 
Massey Park, GREEN-WINGED TEAL (m) continues on March Valley Rd, NORTHERN 
FLICKER Maple Hill Park and in Gatineau sector Ferme Moore and COMMON GRACKLE 
in Manotick today.

Due to increasing and widespread concerns regarding disturbance of wildlife and 
property, the OFNC's Birds Committee no longer reports owl sightings on the 
Internet. We will continue to encourage the reporting of owls to
