Birders, This balmy day, with much of the snow cover beginning to melt, has not induced the Snowy Owls of Holland Marsh to return home. I found 7 there today, all in the quadrant bordered by the Holland River, Dufferin, Hwy 9 and Hwy 400. There were three along the short stretch of Jane between Woodchopper and Edward. Two were on the West side of Jane, one was on the East side. There were also three on Strawberry, one on the North side and two on the South. Finally, there was one north of Bernardt. All were in the field and far from the roads.
The owls showed distinct differences in their marking. Some were totally covered with the black/brown stripes, whereas others showed much pure white, even having a virtually all white upper body. With heavy snow expected tonight the owls should all be there tomorrow. Be aware that Dufferin is under construction and is for now not a through road. Take Hwy 400 to Hwy 9 and exit to go east on 9. Jane and Keele both cross 9 and are good entries to the fields where the Snowies are.
