Hey Folks,

Amanda Guercio and I spent a pleasant afternoon birding several lakeside
locales today.

The most remarkable sighting was at the base of the Leslie Spit, where, as
soon as we got out of the car, we were greeted by a Common Raven at the
parking lot off Unwin Ave. We watched it harass a Red-tailed Hawk
aggressively for a few minutes, and it then left.

On our way back out of Wet Woods, walking east on Unwin towards the parking
lot, we observed a raven carrying a large stick. We watched the bird and it
brought the stick over to a smokestack visible from the road. After several
minutes of watching we observed two ravens, both of which were carrying
nesting material to the smokestack. It was very exciting, representing (to
my knowledge) only the second or third modern (in over 80 years) nesting
attempt in Toronto! Hopefully the birds have success!

Directions:

Go south on Leslie St. and before you reach the entrance to the spit, make
a right on Unwin Ave. and park in the lot. Walk west on Unwin and you will
see a heap of concrete on your right, which is where the ravens where
gathering the sticks. Walk a little further and you should see two large,
wide smokestacks on your right. The rightmost one is where the ravens were
building. It is quite far away and a scope would be helpful.

Good Birding!
