Thickson's Woods in Whitby, east of Toronto, is one of our favourite birding hotspots. This small oasis for birds on the north shore of Lake Ontario has recorded an amazing 313 species. Now there is a new book (annotated checklist) by Phill Holder and Margaret Bain that depicts all 313 species with a colour photo, plus the seasonal status for every species and specific dates for very rare and vagrant species. In addition, there are several short notes about how Thickson's Woods became a nature reserve, Lake-watching off Thickson's Woods, migration fallouts, and the mystery hybrid "Thickson's Warbler". The book is dedicated to the late Matt Holder, son of Phill and Sue Holder. All proceeds go to the Matt Holder Environmental Education Fund, which will support young people doing ecological research in the Thickson's Woods Nature Reserve.
