Point Pelee National Park Migration Report: Sunday, 11 May, 2014 Hello birders,
Though it has seemed a generally slow day overall, there have been a good number of excellent sightings. The 2 most notable birds this morning were a WESTERN KINGBIRD and a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER (presumably the bird seen on Friday) that reverse-migrated off the Tip about 45 minutes apart from each other. Others seen at the Tip include BAY-BREASTED, TENNESSEE and WILSON'S WARBLERS and several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER also showed well at the Tip before flying north. A female SUMMER TANAGER was seen again just east of the Tip exhibit area where both YELLOW-THROATED and PHILADELPHIA VIREOS also foraged. A male HOODED WARBLER showed along the seasonal footpath south of Sparrow Field. During a Friends of Point Pelee guided hike, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER gave excellent looks on the west beach just west of the Visitor Centre. Woodland Nature Trail has been productive, with the best birds being an ACADIAN FLYCATCHER half-way along the western section and a PHILADELPHIA VIREO at the far southern section. In nearly the same location where a male was seen yesterday, a female CERULEAN WARBLER fed high in the trees on the Chinquapin Oak Trail just north of the junction with Tilden's Woods Trail. Tilden's also produced a YELLOW-THROATED VIREO just before the Shuster Trail off-shoot. A male CAPE MAY WARBLER was seen just past the off-shoot. A singing male PRAIRIE WARBLER has been dependable just south of Northwest Beach, along with a MOURNING WARBLER. Just south of there along the west beach was a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW.
