While camping at Balsam Lake Prov. Pk., we also heard the Long-tailed ducks at the same time (10:00 P.M.) but assumed that they were simply displaced from the lake by rampant fireworks! Our Carden weekend list topped 104 species, including at least two Loggerhead Shrikes on Wyllie Road at Bluebird box 10 on the east and west sides. The ones on the west side were noticed by Len Manning and his friend Paul just after noon. Angie had found one a couple hours earlier on the east side. *Thanks to all who gave us tips on where to find these birds on our three day tour!*

Thanks to Ron Reid who tipped us off to the Golden-winged Warbler at the Sedge Wren parking area (where two sedge wrens were calling and giving good displays in the nearby marsh).

Whippoorwills and common loons called at night at the Prov. Park and Upland Sandpipers were everywhere we went in the Alvar as well as Am. Bitterns in two marshes (Sedge Wren and Prospect) and on out in the field on McNamee Road east of Shrike Rd. two mornings in a row.

Cheers,
Ken Williams

Carden Alvar is located just north of Kirkfield, which is on county road 48
east of highway 12 in Kawartha Lakes County, east of Orillia.
