Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) maintains records in a 50km radius of MacDonald Park, Kingston. Birders already using eBird are encouraged to share their sightings with 'Kingston FN'. Alternatively, please email, phone or post records directly to me - contact details below. Note: some sightings may require review and remain unconfirmed unless stated otherwise.
Highlights: Things are definitely slowing down now, with summer residents established on territory and young birds already hatching/fledging. A few rarities remain but the 'May Madness' appears to be over. Highlights of the week include; SNOW GOOSE, SURF SCOTER, LEAST BITTERN, RED KNOT, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, BLACK TERN, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, WORM-EATING WARBLER, KENTUCKY WARBLER, and ORCHARD ORIOLE. City of Kingston Marshlands Conservation Area produced a 'late' GREY-CHEEKED THRUSH last weekend, as well as a lingering WILSON'S WARBLER the same day. The GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET seen there on 1st was probably one of the resident birds. Wolfe Island The only notable record from the island concerned 4 SNOW GEESE seen on 31st May along on Highway 95, just south of Reeds Bay Road. Amherst Island At the Martin Edwards Reserve, shorebird highlights include RED KNOT, seen on 31st May, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER and numerous SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. As many as 14 WILSON'S PHALAROPES were noted on the OFO field trip on 31st May, along with lingering LESSER and GREATER YELLOWLEGS and 2 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS. GREAT EGRET, AMERICAN BITTERN and GREEN HERON were also seen. An ORCHARD ORIOLE was seen singing along South Shore Road on 5th, where a late SURF SCOTER was also seen. Please note that you must be a member of the Kingston Field Naturalists (KFN) or be accompanied by a member to access the Martin Edwards Reserve. Amherstview Sewage Lagoons Again, just one BLACK TERN was noted during the week, on 2nd. On the same day, a pair of LESSER SCAUP behaved in an agitated manner, perhaps indicating breeding. NORTHERN SHOVELER, GADWALL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER were also noted, as were a couple of BANK SWALLOWS. Please that that you must be a member of KFN or otherwise obtain permission from the municipality to access the lagoons. Other Sightings At Parrott's Bay Conservation Area, just west of Kingston, the KENTUCKY WARBLER found on the morning of 20th May, continues as of today. The WORM-EATING WARBLER, discovered on 27th May, has not been heard since 2nd June. For the records, if anyone has a photo of this bird, please contact me privately. The OFO Field Trip on Opinicon Road last weekend failed to produce on some fronts (Cerulean being the big miss) but GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER and YELLOW-THROATED VIREO were both seen. Both BLACK-BILLED and YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO have been seen during the week at various locations in the shield. CERULEAN WARBLER (3) was seen on Canoe Lake Road on 4th as was YELLOW-THROATED VIREO. At Orser Road, south of Sydenham, 3 Grasshopper Sparrows were seen on 5th. Also north of the city, Moscow Marsh has produced LEAST BITTERN, 22 BLACK TERNS, COMMON GALLINULE and PIED-BILLED GREBE during the week. The Gananoque RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was heard on 2nd. In order to minimise disturbance to wildlife and property, the KFN Executive will no longer be reporting owl sightings via the Internet. To maintain records for conservation purposes, sightings are welcomed through all the normal channels. As always, thanks to all those who submitted sightings over the last week. Mark. Mark D.
