Good evening Birders, With the advantage of having parents with a cottage in the county I was able to leisurely wait for the Chuck-will's-widow to start calling tonight. At 9:20 my son, David, and I heard the bird singing (we dipped the night before as we arrived at 9:45 and with no moon there was no song later in the evening).
The bird was quite distant (guessing 200m) to the south of Hilltop Road. At one point it did get louder but then either flew or turned away as it was quieter again. Nice to have the advantage of hearing a Whip-poor-will at the same time for comparison, so that even a non-birder like my son could easily distinguish the songs. Also here at 8:45pm was a calling Merlin, well seen as it watched us. Head south on Brewers and then >left/east on Hilltop, go approx 800m and stop. Bird was to the south today >but I believe I've seen a post saying it was north of the road?
