Recent reports to July 3, 2014

There are lots of local breeding birds to look for as we wait for the start of
the early fall migration in mid July.

Another great location to see many local breeding birds is the trails at Meech
Creek Valley in Gatineau Park. Take hwy 5 north, exit east at Autoroute de la
Gatineau, turn north on hwy 105 at La Vallee Motel then west on Chemin Pine to
the P16 parking lot. You can bird along the Nakkertok Ski Trail to the west or
walk back to Chemin Cowden, turn south and bird to the south east along the
Meech Valley Trail.
Highlights on the 29th:
- Ski Trail, 37 species including INDIGO BUNTING, BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO,
OVENBIRD, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, MOURNING, AMERICAN REDSTART, MAGNOLIA,
BLACKBURNIAN, CHESTNUT-SIDED and BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS
- Meech Creek Trail, 46 species including RUFFED GROUSE, ALDER FLYCATCHER,
WARBLING and RED-EYED VIREO, BARN SWALLOW, RED-BREASTED and WHITE-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, VERY, HERMIT and WOOD THRUSH, OVENBIRD, BLACK-AND-WHITE, NASHVILLE,
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART, MAGNOLIA, BLACKBURNIAN, YELLOW and
CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLERS, SAVANNAH, SONG, SWAMP and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS,
SCARLET TANAGER, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, INDIGO BUNTING, BOBOLINK and PURPLE
FINCH

The male EURASIAN WIGEON continues at the mouth of the Rideau Canal at the
Ottawa River and another has been on the Moodie Dr pond (south of Trail Rd)
since the 2nd. A SEDGE WREN was heard and seen near Carleton Place on the 30th
and 1st just east of 1221 Beckwith 9th line in the partially cut field to the
south. SOLITARY SANDPIPER (2) were found on a flooded field on the east side of
the north end of Twin Elm Rd on the 2nd.

Due to widespread concerns regarding disturbance of wildlife and property, the
OFNC's Birds Committee no longer reports OWL sightings on the internet. We will
continue to encourage the reporting of owls to [email protected] for the local
records.

Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations.
