Recent reports to August 21, 2014 The early fall migration appears to be well underway. Increasing numbers of warblers, vireos, flycatchers and the first diving ducks have been reported this week. COMMON NIGHTHAWK are now moving through our area earlier than usual. Small mixed flocks of warblers and vireos have been reported from many locations including the Britannia Conservation Area, Shirleys Bay woods and dyke and Rockcliffe Park. Numbers of NASHVILLE, BLACK-AND-WHITE, PINE, TENNESSEE, CAPE MAY, YELLOW-RUMPED, YELLOW, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART with smaller numbers of CANADA, MAGNOLIA, CHESTNUT-SIDED, BLACK-THROATED GREEN, BAY-BREASTED and a very few NORTHERN PARULA, BLACKBURNIAN, and WILSON'S WARBLERS were reported. Numbers of RED-EYED, WARBLING and a few PHILADELPHIA VIREOS were also reported. A YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was found in the Richmond area on the 17th. Single YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER were found at Shirleys Bay on the 18th and 21st and at Rockcliffe Park on the 21st. An OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER was found at Rockcliffe Park on the 21st. The number of shorebirds present during this last week was variable but the best locations continue to be the Shirleys Bay mudflats and the Crysler lagoon (previously reported as the St. Albert west lagoons) which is just west of the St. Albert lagoons accessed by taking Finch Cambridge Boundry Rd east from hwy 12 just north of Crysler. The South Nation River falls in Crysler (take Second St west from hwy 12) are always worth checking for very close views of shorebirds. At Shirleys Bay there were COMMON GOLDENEYE (1 f) on the 16th, RED-NECKED GREBE (2) on the 17th, RUDDY TURNSTONE (1 juv) on the 15th and on the 21st LESSER SCAUP (2). LESSER SCAUP (3) were also found on the Moodie Dr quarry pond on the 20th. At the Casselman lagoon there was a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER (f) on the 19th. Also on the 19th on Conroy Island in the Ottawa River Deschenes Rapids there were a remarkable 51 juvenile BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS with 9 GREAT EGRETS. A flock of 21 DOWITCHERS was reported circling briefly over the Richmond lagoons on the 20th. COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were reported from a number of locations including 24 over Shirleys Bay on the 17th and 80+ over Pakenham on the 19th. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was observed from hwy 29 just east of Almonte on the 19th. Due to widespread concerns regarding disturbance of wildlife and property, the OFNC's Birds Committee no longer reports OWL sightings on the internet. We will continue to encourage the reporting of owls to [email protected] for the local records. Thanks to everyone who contributed bird observations. _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
