However, eventually the skies began to clear and the air dried out. Temp much cooler as the unsettled weather was a result of a fairly strong cold front passing across Ontario. Winds behind this front swung to the NNW and were fairly moderate to strong for the day. Raptor Observations: Some birds on the move today with a total of xx tallied. Non-raptor Observations: The Canada Geese are starting to show signs of moving and lots of Ring-billed gulls cruising past early on. A ton of swallows in the sky most of the day...including Bank, Barn, Cliff (2), C. Swifts (2), Purple Martin and a single Rough-winged. Several Thrush sp. not id'd because of poor light very early. Several woodpeckers...Red-bellied, Downy and Flicker. In the warbler department some good numbers with Pine, Cape May (few), C. Yellowthroat, Tennessee, Restart (sev.), B.T. Blue (1), Blackburnian (sev.), B.T. Green splashing in a puddle, Black and White (sev.), Chestnut-sided (sev. including youngsters), Magnolia (Sev. including youngsters), Bay-breasted and a very nice male Wilson's right down low in front of us. Also a possible young Mourning. Other species included E.W. Pewee, R.B. Grosbeak, Carolina Wren, Towhee, Wood Thrush, Veery, B.G. Gnatcatcher, Warbling Vireo (sev.), R.E. Vireo (sev.), Cedar Waxwings (lots), G.C. Kinglet, E. Kingbird, E. Phoebe, Empidonax sp. And a quick note on Monarchs...they certainly put in a showing today with several hundred passing through the hawkwatch area. At one point Mary counted 80 passing in a 5-minute span. Predictions: Sunday could be decent with predicted light to moderate NW winds. We had a few Broadwings today so there may be a few more spotted tomorrow. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
