Other visitors were from Amherstburg, LaSalle, Essex and Windsor. Weather: It started off cool at 14C and warmed up to 24C. A clear sky all day with a steady barometric pressure. Winds started from the N, shifted NE, then ENE, then W, and finally the lake effect kicked and the winds were out of the SW - SE. For most of the day the wind speed was in the 6-8 km/hr range, but it went quite calm several times during the day. Raptor Observations: A good day with 95 raptors of 10 species. The best show was put on by the 5 resident Bald Eagles and 2 of the resident Osprey when they were all overhead of the tower at the same time. Non-raptor Observations: Non-raptor migration was fairly active in the first 3 hours of the day at day count was 509 birds of 39 species, including at least 9 species of warbler, 3 flycatchers, and 4 species of shorebird. Cedar Waxwings were the most prominent with 183 birds and American Goldfinch was in 2nd place with 78 birds. Also a good dragonfly and monarch migration day. The day counts for Black Saddlebags and Common Green Darner today doubled last year's highest day count. The day count for Saddlebags today was 41% of last year's total, while the day count for Darners was 36% of last year's total. 41 Monarchs counted today, 10% of last year's total. Predictions: Another sunny day with temperatures ranging from 13 - 24C and winds out of the East at 10 km/hr. Easterly winds may start to bring in bigger numbers of Sharp-shinned Hawks than seen so far this year. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Todd Pepper ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
