First of all a Pine Siskin and the first junco of the season were at my
house this morning (Sept 19) - can't wait to read Ron's finch report to see
if the siskin was a vanguard or a "one off"
Yesterday's hawk watch was excellent ... lost of birds and observers. 1571
hawks and allies - Thx to all for your eyes and good humour.
Highlights of the 72 species were:
Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura) 327
Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) 5
Northern Harrier (Circus cyaneus) 14
Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus) 389
Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) 10
Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) 16 all 1-3 years old except one 4
yr. old
Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) 12
Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) 725
Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) 20
American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) 49
Merlin (Falco columbarius) 3
Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) 1
14 species of waterfowl, Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) X
3 heron species includiung 6 Great Egrets - no wing tags
Common Gallinule (Gallinula galeata) 1
Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) 7
Red Knot (Calidris canutus) 1
Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla) 1
Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos) 3
Short-billed Dowitcher (Limnodromus griseus) 5
Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) 1
Great Crested Flycatcher (Myiarchus crinitus) 1
Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) 2500 estimated by flock counts
Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) 1
monarchs were steady in low numbers probably due to strong winds.

Directions: Exit from the 401 at Brock St. in Whitby. Go south on Brock St.
to Victoria St. Go west on Victoria to Halls Road. Go south on Halls Rd to
the second walkway to Cranberry Marsh.
