Visitors:
The Hawk Festival brought many families from near and far to the tower
today. We had a pretty good number of visitors on the tower all morning
and into the afternoon. The University of Windsor Ornithology students
(some 60 in number) also visited the festival today. They spent time at
the Hawk Tower, but also the Banding Stations learning about our protocals
for recording data on migratory birds. We hope to see some of these
students back thru the count season. Thanks to all who helped make it a
great day!
Weather:
A hazy warm morning on the tower led to a ful our warm summer like day by
afternoon with temperature reaching 25.5C. Winds were constantly from the
South, at times SW and at times SE, but relatively light all day.
Raptor Observations:
8 species of Raptor were tallied today. Sharp-shinned Hawks made up the
majority of todays count numbers, but Merlins had a strong showing today
with 13 birds.
Non-raptor Observations:
Blue Jays were on the move this morning in flocks of 30-80, totalling 890
by the end of the count. Other notable species were American Goldfinch,
Cedar Waxwings and Chimney Swifts. Hundreds of Tree Swallows spent the day
feeding over the marsh and ponds all afternoon.
