Greetings Ontbirders, Bill Gilmour and I had a pretty good morning at Presqu’ile.
We located a male Prothonotary Warbler in the last tall trees at the tip of Owen Pt. at 9:00 a.m. This is along the trail about 30m from the tip viewing station where there is a 4x4” post with no sign on it. We then relocated the bird about 100m further inland from the tip at 11:00 so it is hanging around but very hard to find. In both cases it came in to spishing and is one of a very few land birds on Owen Pt. this morning. This is one of the very few park records and the first in fall. We also covered Gull Island and it is still quite good for shorebirds with highlights being the long staying Hudsonian Godwit and Whimbrel, and new this morning is a juv. Long-billed Dowitcher that was feeding on the SE corner of the island. Also present are Baird’s, Black-bellied, American Golden and Semi Plovers. It was glass calm this morning and we could see upwards of 300 Horned Grebe, a female Black Scoter and 4 Common Terns out in Popham Bay. Presqu’ile is well signed from Brighton and can be reached from either Hwy 401 or Hwy 2. Cheers, Doug Doug McRae P.O.
