Today (2014-10-11) at approximately 16h00 EDT I saw a juvenile ruddy duck on Grenadier Pond in High Park. I presume it's very lost but it seemed in good health and alert.
The bird was swimming by itself just north of the large planked platform that extends into the pond from the trail along the eastern edge of the pond and just south of where the trail beside the ornamental water gardens come out, but of course could be anywhere at all if it remains on the pond tomorrow. High Park is located in Toronto between the Queensway and Bloor Streets, north-south, and Parkside Drive and Ellis Avenue East-West. The eponymous subway stop, and walking ~1.5 km south, the Queen (501) streetcar to the Colborne Lodge Drive stop and walking ~1.0 km north, or driving along the Queensway or Lakeshore and turning north on Colborne Lodge Drive will all get you to the appropriate location beside Grenadier Pond, which has a comprehensive trail along its eastern edge. -- Graydon _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
