Thanks to Mary and Keith for getting a count done today. Weather: Winds from the SSE this morning were fierce and although we had balmy temps (18C), facing into that wind for two hours was chilling. In the end, rain moved in and we moved out. Raptor Observations: Observers noted a high count of 2 local Bald Eagles, but there were possibly 3 or even 4 individuals cruising the cliff, back and forth, during the 2-hour watch, including 1 adult, the rest, youngsters. the 2 Kestrels made a run for it together early in the first hour, but were blown back a couple of times, retried and after several minutes, made it to the treeline, their flight remeniscent of the Monarchs in last week's high winds. 8 TVs flew west at the north end of the field, looking serious in their attempt, but 8 TVs seemed to be blown back about twenty minutes later and thus were erased from today's tally sheet. After that they cruised up and down the field. The local Red-tailed Hawk kited at the edge of the Cliff for a few minutes as the hour changed. Non-raptor Observations: Passerines spotted today were mostly across from the knoll, hugging the bushes and grapevines; thanks to Keith for today's list which included Winter Wren, Phoebe, Ruby- and Golden-crowned Kinglet, Yellow-rumped Warbler, White-throated Sparrow, American Robin, Black-capped Chickadee, American Goldfinch and Eastern Towhee. At the north end of the field, a few small flocks of Bluejays and Red-winged Blackbirds flew west and 2 Cormorants briefly joined the Gull parade along the cliff. No Butterflies or Dragonflies were noted today, but even in that wind, we still had Mosquitoes and Midges! ======================================================================== Report submitted by Dave Brown ([email protected]) Hawk Cliff Hawkwatch information may be found at: http://www.ezlink.on.ca/~thebrowns/HawkCliff/index.htm _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
