Recent reports to October 16, 2014 Shirleys Bay continues to be very active as indicated by this report to eBird by two birders on the 14th: 51 species at the Shirleys Bay boat launch, woods, and causeway short of first island; Hilda feeders; almost all ducks were in the bay. Canada Goose 10, Wood Duck 1, Gadwall 2 distant, among AMWI, so there may have been more, American Wigeon 15, American Black Duck 60, Mallard 25, Northern Shoveler 2, male and female, Northern Pintail 2 both in flight, Green-winged Teal 20, Redhead 2, male and female, Ring-necked Duck 60, Greater Scaup 2, there may have been more; 100+ scaup disappeared from sight pretty quickly, Lesser Scaup 500, White-winged Scoter 3 males, 2 on the lake; 1 in the bay, Long-tailed Duck 2 males, Bufflehead 10, Common Goldeneye 10, 6 on the lake; 4 in the bay, Hooded Merganser 11, Red-breasted Merganser 6 on the lake, Ruddy Duck 16, Horned Grebe 3 on the lake, Double-crested Cormorant 8, 2 on the lake; 6 in the bay, Great Blue Heron 1, Northern Harrier 1, Ring-billed Gull 10, Herring Gull 1, Great Black-backed Gull 2, Belted Kingfisher 1, Hairy Woodpecker 2, Blue Jay 5, American Crow 5, Common Raven 2, Black-capped Chickadee 7, White-breasted Nuthatch 3, Golden-crowned Kinglet 3, Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1, Hermit Thrush 1, American Robin 25, American Pipit 1, Cedar Waxwing 1, Yellow-rumped Warbler 2, American Tree Sparrow 2, Field Sparrow 1, Song Sparrow 6, White-throated Sparrow 50, White-crowned Sparrow 10, Dark-eyed Junco 3, Northern Cardinal 1, Red-winged Blackbird 30, Rusty Blackbird 40, Purple Finch 1. The Almonte lagoons continue to be active with CACKLING (56) and CANADA (2800) GEESE with NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP and RUDDY DUCK on the 14th. The ponds and marshes along the Quebec shore of the Ottawa River between Gatineau and Masson are very active at this time of year. On the 15th there were continuing LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (2) and STILT SANDPIPER, with LESSER YELLOWLEGS and WILSON'S SNIPE (2) at the lagoons south of Mason. Notable at Marais des Laiches east and Marais des Grenouillettes were lingering MARSH WRENS. Baie Noire continues to be active with EURASIAN WIGEON (2) present on the 10th. Shorebirds continue to be hard to find. On the 12th: at the Embrun lagoons LESSER YELLOWLEGS (2), LEAST (1), SEMIPALMATED (3), WHITE-RUMPED (1) and PECTORAL (22) SANDPIPER and DUNLIN (2). There was one GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the Giroux Rd ponds and at the Crysler lagoon on the 14th there were small numbers of GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and DUNLIN. Continuing to move through our area are: ORANGE-CROWNED, NASHVILLE, YELLOW-RUMPED, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA, AMERICAN REDSTART and PALM WARBLERS, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, many RUBY and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a few FOX and LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. There were AMERICAN BITTERN at Petrie Island on the 10th, AMERICAN COOT (3) on the Rideau Canal south west of Dow's Lake, ROSS'S GOOSE on the Moodie Dr pond on the 11th, BRANT (4) at Andrew Haydon Park, juvenile LAPLAND LONGSPUR at Frank Kenny and Regimbald Rds on the 12th, juvenile BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER (1) on the Britannia pier and HORNED and RED-NECKED GREBE at Andrew Haydon on the 13th.
