Weather: A brisk and cloudy day with wind speeds averaging around 19km/h coming from the N and NNW. There was 100% cloud all day and some light drizzle every now and again. Raptor Observations: Turkey Vultures had the largest numbers again today with 1334. Many kettles drifted, seemingly aimlessly, for upwards of an hour before finally making the trip west. Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks also seemed hesitant to migrate, but Sharp-shinned and Cooper's Hawks as well as American Kestrels were zooming by the tower at great speeds. 5 male Northern Harriers that came relatively close to the tower were a definite highlight for the day, the black wingtips standing out wonderfully against the cloudy sky. Non-raptor Observations: Passerines weren't as evident today, with not as many flocks flying overhead or over the marsh. 923 American Crows were counted and the usual crew of kinglets and sparrows were around the tower, though in smaller numbers. See today's eBird list http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/view/checklist?subID=S20300807 Predictions: A cool morning, warming up to 12C with winds at 25km/h from the north. ======================================================================== Report submitted by Jenna McDermott ([email protected]) Holiday Beach Conservation Area information may be found at: http://hbmo.ca/ _______________________________________________ ONTBIRDS is presented by the Ontario Field Ornithologists - the provincial birding organization.
