Recent reports to October 23, 2014 A TUFTED TITMOUSE has been coming to a property on Gregoire Rd north of Marionville occasionally. It was seen on the 21st and 22nd but has not been reported since. A RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER has been seen at a feeder at the back of a house which can be seen from the old stone school house SS#1 in Goldridge Park on Goldridge Dr near Kanata Ave in Kanata. It was seen on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd. Scoters, Horned and Red-necked Grebe, Red-throated Loons and Brant are late and have been moving through our area in very small numbers. On the 22nd a flock of at least 1500 adult BLACK SCOTERS were found with SURF (3) and WHITE-WINGED (3) SCOTERS on the Ottawa River east of the Shirleys Bay boat launch. On the 23rd from the Shirleys Bay causeway LONG-TAILED DUCK (1), BLACK (2) and WHITE-WINGED (1) SCOTER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER (1), BUFFLEHEAD (8), COMMON GOLDENEYE (27), LESSER SCAUP (100) and three River Otters were observed. At the boat launch there was a winter plumage Dunlin along the shoreline. A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER has been seen along the Stoney Swamp Jack Pine Trail near the feeder or south of the boardwalk south of the P12 parking area on Moodie Dr. since the 16th. EVENING GROSBEAK (3) have also been seen at that location and at the Shirleys Bay parking area (2), at a Pakenham feeder (8) and at the feeders on the west side of Larose forest at 1917 Indian Creek Road since the 19th. With the extremely high water levels shorebirds continue to be hard to find. On the 17th at the Embrun lagoons there were GREATER YELLOWLEGS (10), WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER (1), SEMIPALMATED (1) and BLACK-BELLIED (2) PLOVER. There were YELLOWLEGS, WHITE-RUMPED (1) and PECTORAL (3) SANDPIPER and SANDERLING (1 juv.) at the Almonte lagoon on the 19th. Small numbers of SNOW BUNTING have been reported at a number of locations. A very late GREAT EGRET was seen on the 19th at Shirleys Bay. The only later record I know of was on October 26th, 2010 at the Moodie Dr quarry pond. ORANGE-CROWNED and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER continue to move through our area with very small numbers of NASHVILLE, NORTHERN PARULA, and PALM WARBLERS. Also BLUE-HEADED VIREO, many RUBY and GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, PINE SISKIN and FOX SPARROWS. Interesting reports were: GREEN HERON, GOLDEN EAGLE, BRANT (flocks of 100 and 14), RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR (3), tens of thousands of SNOW GEESE east of Casselman on the 21st, SANDHILL CRANE (36) from Smith Rd, TURKEY VULTURES (6) over Cote Vertu, RED-EYED VIREO at 2 locations, VESPER SPARROW at Green's Creek, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER (1) and STILT SANDPIPER (1) at the Masson lagoon on the 18th and a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on the 19th.
